15 Ways I Own My Weird (and you should too!)

Today, even if you’re exhausted or “not in the mood, Katie, gosh!!!” I want you to give some thought to the goofy things that make you YOU.
Things you sometimes feel weird or embarrassed or shy or silly about.
Guess what? Those are the BEST THINGS ABOUT YOU. Own them! Make them a part of your “brand” and your “out in the world” self. Use them to find connections and niches that are uniquely YOU.

I am truly over the “you’re one person professionally and another at home” crap we get thrown at us all the time. We don’t need to “be like everyone else” to be professional and successful–and what does be like everyone else mean, anyway? I promise you, everyonnneee has weird. Let’s embrace it and own it. Have you seen that episode of Modern Family where Phil can’t sell the “murder house” and Haley helps him by finding people who are interested in it because of that fact? Maybe not the best example, but the point is when we hide and try to be “normal” we don’t get what we need and others don’t meet the real us and nothing works as easily as it should.

***drumroll please***
For your reading pleasure, I will now own 15 of my weirds for you here…

I still collect stuffed animals and my 30th birthday is coming up in 3 months. My favorites include Bean Bunny of Muppets fame, purchased by me at my first trip to Disney World (I think I was 6). They do not make him anymore and this fact makes me very sad for the generations that came after me.

If I could work a day behind the scenes at a zoo, I’d die of joy (even if there’s probably more poop than I could imagine–BUT PENGUINS).

I got a $35 Narwhal with an ice cream cone horn stuffed animal for my birthday last year. The technical name is “Nomwhal”. I would like to collect the other 2 in the set. Tasty Peach Studios has the goods.

I delight in goose families crossing the road to safety, and baby ducklings jumping off a dock to join their mom and dad. I love seagull footprints in sand.

I will point out the nearby animals to everyone around me, even when (especially when) they can already see the animals for themselves.

I love rainbow sherbet–Baskin Robbins is my personal favorite. When I was little, the lady at our local Baskin Robbins knew me by name and always made sure she gave me lots of pineapple in her rainbow sherbet scoops. She also gave me out-of-season ice cream cakes (like an Easter cake the day after Easter)! SCORE.

I can hear the ice cream truck from miles away and I still have the urge to run outside screaming with $3.00 in my hand. It’s harder now that I don’t carry much cash.

I love “weird” authors, performers, movies, music, etc. Favorites include authors Jeff Vandermeer and Kelly Link; performers Florence & The Machine and Sam Rockwell; movies Primer and Inception; musicians Zoe Keating and Magnetic Fields. I’ll think of a million more as soon as I publish this post. Point is: THEY OWN THEIR WEIRD AND I LOVE IT.

I LOVE stickers. I hate using them for some reason. I just want to have them. So pretty.

I have a lot of clothes with cats on them AND I ALWAYS WILL.

I seriously enjoy watching people play and win video games. I’m terrible at beating most video games, so I love seeing people beat the big bosses and find the hidden treasures.

I make friends with the checkout clerks, sales people, servers, and strangers around me when I go shopping or out to eat or go out in the world. I made friends with a woman once when we ran into each other twice while on our respective walks around our neighborhood. We joked about how hot it was outside. I’m sure I embarrass friends or loved ones when I do this. Oh well, IT’S FUN :-).

I like to read a few books at once. Currently reading: The Diviners by Libba Bray (spooky YA thriller) and Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (offbeat memoir).

I love the Her Interactive Nancy Drew computer games, they help fulfill my deep wish to solve a real life mystery. Plus Her Interactive is a company that encourages girls to game–umm, YES!

I LOVED the song “Mmmbop” when it came out in 3rd grade, but all the kids were making fun on Hanson, so I never spoke up. WELL I’M SAYING IT NOW, I LOVE THAT SONG, YOU LITTLE PUNKS.

Ooooh I have MANY more–but those will be a post for another day :-)!!

Will you embrace your weird with me and share one weird thing about yourself in the comments, you silly goose? Let’s celebrate how freakin’ awesome you are!!

Posting to the Wall of Weird.
    1. When I visit the Lincoln Park Zoo, my first stop is the Birds of Prey, especially the vultures. At Brookfield Zoo I must see the Grevey’s Zebras. They have no stripes on their bellies.
    2. After a run, to hydrate, in a large glass I mix Cranberry juice with Lipton Green Tea Citrus and throw in a hand full of blueberries. When the liquid is gone, I tilt the glass and eat the blueberries.
    3. I would rather hear Jimmy Webb sing his own songs over the versions that other people sang for the hit.

I LOVE THESE 🙂 I have to try your Cran-Green Tea with blueberries. Sounds delicious!! And now I want to go to the zoo 🙂

Okay I commented a sec ago, but it said it blocked me as a suspected bot. Weird. Trying again hahah

I never knew how much I needed an ice cream narwhal, and a zombie alpaca until now.

    Okay my weird contributions…
I have extremely eclectic music taste. It ranges from Christian praise & worship, to country music, to melodic metal to ska…

I adore shoes… but I only wear them for a short time, and then they’re kicked off to the side, and I’m barefoot for the rest of the day.

I simultaneously long to be invited to things, but don’t really want to go. #introvertproblems

I was resorted when Pottermore revamped their site, and I was really genuinely mad about it.

You must splurge and get yourself that ice cream narwhal and zombie alpaca. But how to keep out of reach of the kids ;-)??
I love your “weirds”. What did you get resorted to?? I refused to resort, I was scared they’d kick me of out of Hufflepuff haha!!
